LIFECYCLE CASE STUDY

Better decisions for the team running the account.

Ally Shoes worked with Thrivelia in a consulting capacity, using account reviews to refine segmentation, list management and the next tests for its email programme.

LIFECYCLE CASE STUDY

Three decisions behind the work.

Consulting reviews: July–August 2025

01 · THE CONTEXT

The starting point

This was an advisory relationship. The July and August reviews examined recent performance and helped the client team decide what to change, rather than transferring the entire account to an agency-managed service.

02 · THE WORK

The decisions behind the journey.

Separate audience quality from audience size

The July consultation reviewed a joint-giveaway audience separately from the established list. It also covered inactivity segments and changes to sunset criteria.

Make the next test specific

The recommendations included a dedicated giveaway welcome, plain-text testing and different engagement windows for leads and customers. In August, the discussion returned to a simpler welcome design and broader engagement criteria for selected sends.

Connect lifecycle advice to the product

The reviews considered purchase timing, product and colour preferences, and the next useful flow. New site-abandonment, second-welcome and low-stock journeys were recommendations, not all confirmed launches.

INSIDE THE DECISIONS

A larger list does not answer the audience question.

Ally Shoes’ consultation reviewed the joint-giveaway audience separately from the established list. That was a useful distinction: the reason someone joined can differ from the reason an existing customer wants another pair of shoes. A dedicated giveaway welcome was a proposed way to acknowledge that starting context before applying the wider programme.

The reviews also considered different engagement windows for leads and customers. Purchase history provides information beyond recent opens, so one inactivity rule can exclude people whose relationship with the brand is still commercially relevant. The appropriate window is a testable account decision, not a universal threshold.

Make advice usable by the people implementing it.

The next tests were concrete: simpler welcome design, plain-text alternatives and selected broader audiences. Product, colour and purchase timing then informed recommendations for further lifecycle work. The client retained execution ownership, so the output was a prioritised set of decisions rather than an agency takeover of the account.

A useful consulting handover names the audience, proposed message change, owner and result that would change the next decision. Return to those questions in the following review and distinguish implemented recommendations from ideas still on the roadmap. That makes advisory work assessable without attributing every later order to the consultation.

03 · THE OUTCOME

What the work delivered.

The documented output is consulting: account analysis, decisions and a prioritised testing roadmap. The client retained implementation ownership. No account-wide revenue gain is attributed solely to Thrivelia’s advice.

WHAT TO APPLY

Take the lesson into your own programme.

Give a team a test they can implement and interpret. Specify the audience, message change and decision the result will inform. Keep recommendations, client implementation and measured outcomes as separate stages.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WORK

What this case study shows.

When does email consulting make sense instead of full account management?

Ally Shoes worked with Thrivelia on account reviews, segmentation, list management and test priorities while implementation ownership remained with its team. Consulting fits this division of responsibility when the brand can execute but needs stronger diagnosis and prioritisation. Agree who turns recommendations into live changes and who checks the result.

How do you compare consulting with a full-service email agency?

Compare the work your team can own with the gaps it needs filled: diagnosis, strategy, copy, design, implementation, quality assurance and reporting. Consulting leaves more execution with the brand; full-service management covers more of that workload. Scope and ownership are more useful comparisons than the fee alone.
