LIFECYCLE CASE STUDY
One checkout. Two approaches to motivation.
Thrivelia built persona-led checkout journeys in Iterable and launched new versions against the existing programme, keeping the experiment separate from unproven growth claims.
Implementation window: December 2025–February 2026
LIFECYCLE CASE STUDY
Three decisions behind the work.
Implementation window: December 2025–February 2026
01 · THE CONTEXT
The starting point
The checkout work used customer context to make follow-up more relevant. The brief included quiz attributes and behavioural branches, rather than a single message for every abandoned checkout.
02 · THE WORK
The decisions behind the journey.
Build the decision logic
The architecture considered persona, quiz answers and whether earlier messages had been opened. The intent was to connect follow-up to the customer’s own context.
Keep a comparison in place
The February implementation used a 50/50 split between the existing journeys and the new versions. On 10 February, the delivery update confirmed the ALC and WL journeys were live and working.
Respect changes in scope
Later in February, the client chose to stop the alcohol-related programme. The weight-management test continued at that point. That change limits what can be inferred from the initial launch.
INSIDE THE DECISIONS
Personalisation changes the argument, not just the greeting.
Hypnozio’s checkout architecture considered persona and quiz answers, with further branches based on earlier interaction. The purpose was to make the reason to continue fit the customer’s context. That requires agreement between the customer attributes, the branch logic and the content; a personalised introduction alone would not deliver the intended journey.
The 50/50 comparison kept the existing programme in place as a reference while new versions ran. This gave the work a clearer evaluation structure than replacing the whole journey and assuming any later change came from the new emails.
A fair comparison needs a stable scope.
The alcohol-related programme stopped later in February while the weight-management test continued. That change belongs in the analysis: two journeys that began together no longer had the same running period. It would be misleading to combine their results into one broad conversion claim.
For a similar test, specify eligibility, assignment, conversion and the observation period before launch. Keep the customer context available to both versions, and record any interruption or programme change. Use business conversion as the outcome and treat email engagement as supporting evidence. This case confirms an implemented comparison; the available records do not establish a dependable winning variant.
03 · THE OUTCOME
What the work delivered.
The new journeys were implemented and entered a controlled comparison. A clean, comparable result for the test is not established by the records used here, so no conversion multiplier is claimed.
WHAT TO APPLY
Take the lesson into your own programme.
Use the same eligibility rules, conversion definition and observation window for both arms. When a programme is stopped or its scope changes, record that change before interpreting the test.
Implementation window: December 2025–February 2026. This case study covers the specific work described. Journey diagrams explain the approach.
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WORK
What this case study shows.
How can persona-led checkout emails be tested fairly?
Hypnozio launched new persona-led checkout journeys in Iterable against its existing programme. That documents an experiment, not a proven growth result. Define the comparison, allocation, conversion metric and evaluation window before deciding whether personalisation worked; a more tailored message still needs evidence that it improves the customer’s next action.
Which metrics should decide an email or sign-up test?
Start with the business decision and choose the primary metric before launch. Evaluate conversion or revenue alongside recipient counts, offer costs and guardrail metrics, rather than declaring a winner from opens or clicks alone. Confirm the comparison is fair and the available sample supports the conclusion; short reported tests may remain directional.
