LIFECYCLE CASE STUDY

After the first order, the relationship begins.

A-OK9’s programme combined new lifecycle flows with practical campaign themes and offer testing, with monthly reporting used to adjust the approach.

LIFECYCLE CASE STUDY

Three decisions behind the work.

Work documented: summer 2024

01 · THE CONTEXT

The starting point

Customers needed more than another product announcement. The work connected post-purchase follow-up with relevant seasonal topics and different reasons to shop again.

02 · THE WORK

The decisions behind the journey.

Extend the lifecycle coverage

The August account review recorded newly implemented post-purchase and site-abandonment flows alongside the campaign programme.

Make the campaign relevant

The team used timely pet-owner contexts, including summer hydration and fireworks, as ways to frame useful content. These were communication angles, not claims of medical efficacy.

Read offers in context

Later reviews compared tier-based promotions, free gifts, reminders and plain-text messages. The monthly direction varied, so a single stronger period was not treated as permanent growth.

INSIDE THE DECISIONS

Give product education a reason to be read now.

Summer hydration and fireworks offered concrete contexts for A-OK9’s campaigns. They gave the content a place in a pet owner’s calendar rather than relying on another general product announcement. The communication task was to connect the topic, the product information and a clear next action without turning the email into an unsupported efficacy claim.

Post-purchase and site-abandonment journeys then served different moments. A recent buyer has already made a decision and may need useful follow-up. A visitor who left the site may still be considering the range. Reviewing those audiences separately makes the message purpose clearer.

Read promotions across more than one month.

The account reviews considered tiered promotions, gifts, reminders and plain-text messages, with results moving in both directions over time. That gives the story a practical lesson: an offer that works in one context is a hypothesis to revisit, not a permanent instruction to increase promotional pressure.

For a similar programme, record the audience, offer, timing and recent purchase exclusions alongside each result. Look at order value, repeat purchase and the cost of the offer before selecting the next test. Keep A-OK9’s account separate from Absolute Dogs; related ownership does not make their products, audiences or results interchangeable.

03 · THE OUTCOME

What the work delivered.

The records show active campaign testing and implemented lifecycle work. They report both stronger and weaker months, supporting an iterative story rather than a single uninterrupted growth claim. A-OK9 is treated as its own brand and account, separate from Absolute Dogs.

WHAT TO APPLY

Take the lesson into your own programme.

Compare offers on the behaviour you want to improve, including order value and repeat purchase. Keep product education relevant to the customer’s situation, and review the next month before turning a short-term result into a broad claim.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WORK

What this case study shows.

How can a pet brand keep communication useful after the first order?

A-OK9 combined lifecycle flows with timely pet-owner campaign themes and offer testing, using monthly reporting to adjust the approach. For a similar brand, distinguish product guidance from a sales prompt and connect the next message to the owner’s actual stage. This historical project documents the work rather than a verified retention-lift percentage.

What should a retention programme measure beyond email revenue?

Track second-purchase rate at a consistent customer age, time to the next order, product progression and customer lifetime value. Separate new and mature cohorts so a change in acquisition volume does not distort the diagnosis. These are evaluation principles for the next stage of work, not additional results claimed for this project.

YOUR NEXT CHAPTER

What could your email programme do next?

Find the opportunities in your customer journey.
