Klaviyo Segmentation Guide: How to Build Truly Engaged Segments
An engaged segment is only useful if the signals defining engagement are real. Privacy opens, machine activity and static recency windows can make a list look healthier than it is. Good segmentation should reflect actual opportunity to engage.
Why opens alone are no longer enough
Open data can still be useful, but it should not be treated as a perfect human-engagement signal.
Privacy features and machine activity can inflate the number of profiles that appear active. If those profiles are then used to define a supposedly safe engaged audience, deliverability decisions can be based on false confidence.
Use multiple engagement signals
Recent clicks
Recent purchases
Site activity where available
Real opens where privacy noise can be excluded
Product usage or app activity
Form submissions and preference updates
Recent high-intent behaviour
Think exclusion-first
Many teams ask only who should receive a campaign. A stronger system also asks who has exhausted their current opportunity to engage.
That can include recently overexposed customers, long-term non-clickers, customers who just purchased the promoted product, subscribers in incompatible lifecycle states, or profiles with weak deliverability signals.
Engagement windows should be dynamic
There is no reason a 30-day, 60-day or 90-day engaged segment should be permanent.
If a wider audience continues to click and convert profitably without damaging deliverability, the window can expand. If engagement deteriorates, it can contract.
The segment should respond to evidence rather than become a fixed rule.
Segmentation should solve a decision
The goal is not to create more segments. The goal is to make a better decision about who should receive which message, offer or experience.
If two groups receive the same content, timing and offer, splitting them may add complexity without creating value.
A practical engaged-segment framework
Begin with recent clickers and purchasers
Add reliable open signals only where appropriate
Exclude obvious machine/privacy noise where possible
Suppress customers with no meaningful engagement over a defined period
Layer lifecycle state and product relevance
Review the segment against conversion, unsubscribe and deliverability trends
Adjust the window when evidence changes
